The role of a modern day firefighter is varied, challenging
and rewarding. We are called upon by the public in emergencies which means
we could be called upon to rescue people trapped in a burning building,
to extricate drivers in their cars who have become trapped following a
car accident, or to assist at a chemical spillage in a factory.
For this reason, firefighters need to remain calm in stressful situations,
be physically fit, be adaptable and have the ability to improvise and
to deal with members of the public in a professional way.
Firefighters are either full time or part time. Part time firefighters
have normal jobs but are on call in case of emergency. They carry pagers
and are alerted to callouts, when they leave their normal place of work
or their homes and respond to the fire station to then turn out in the
fire appliance once a crew has arrived. Fulltime firefighters provide
24 hours cover from a fire station and work shifts, usually 2 day shifts
followed by 2 night shifts. They then have 4 days off.
The role of the firefighter is continually changing as new techniques
and equipment are introduced. As well as responding to emergencies, you
will also be expected to work closely with the community:
If you have ever dreamed of becoming a Firefighter then you will firstly need to know how to apply and how best to prepare.
My website will get you into the best physical shape possible…
far that and above that the fire service expect so the physical selection
tests will pose no problem if you grab a copy of my book.
The process for selecting firefighters however is a long and intense process
so as well as proving that you are physically strong and fit enough to
pass the physical stage of the process, you will also have to be successful
at the initial application form, a written test, a practical test using
fire service equipment, a medical and finally, an interview.
The details of the physical selection test to join the UK fire service
can be found HERE,
and if you looking at a career in the United States, then details of the
US-CPAT can be found HERE.
